2020 Virtual Class Day Awards for Excellence in Academic Performance and Teaching
Patricia J. Culligan Academic Achievement Award
This award is given to the student(s) with the highest GPA of the class. Patricia J. Culligan is the Robert A.W. and Christine S. Carlton Professor of Civil Engineering and Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at Columbia University. She is also the founding associate director of the Data Science Institute. There are two recipients of the award this year.
Ashwin Jayaraman completed the M.S. in Data Science in December 2019 and is also a recipient of this year's Outstanding Course Assistant Award (see below). He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a master's degree in applied mathematics from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
Ridhi Kapoor has an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, where she received the Director’s Gold Medal for her overall performance. She works full-time at Bloomberg as a data scientist on the BVAL Quant Team and took summer courses in order to graduate with her cohort.
Data Science Outstanding Course Assistant Awards
Ashwin Jayaraman completed the M.S. in Data Science in December 2019. He also has an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a master's degree in applied mathematics from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He considers himself a person who is fascinated by numbers and is working on applying deep learning models in the semiconductor industry. Ashwin was a course assistant for the Analysis of Algorithms course in Spring 2019 and Algorithms for Data Science in Fall 2019.

Kartik Parnami is a second semester master's degree student in the Department of Computer Science and holds a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology. Prior to Columbia, he worked as a software developer at Amazon and Tower Research Capital. Parnami was a course assistant for the Machine Learning for Data Science course in Spring 2020.

Yu Jian Wu is a second semester master's degree student in the Department of Computer Science and was a double major in mathematics and computer science at Swarthmore College. He was a course assistant for the Computer Systems for Data Science course in Spring 2020.

He was extremely proactive in setting up the course infrastructure, answering student questions and jumping on any technical issues with the programming assignments.
